Crib bumpers?

When do you find it necessary to put a bumper on the crib? We bought a new crib for the baby and don't have a bumper yet! I don't really want to buy one unless it's a necessity. What do you think?

    When i was expecting my son I had someone make the nursery gear for his room. She told me that "they" actually discourage bumper pads now, because baby could get tangled. So, I never had one for him. He is almost 2 now, and seems to be fine without! Plus, we had a pretty crib, so the woodwork was able to be shown off more!
